Bollywood has been obsessed with remakes and biographies for a while and every other announced project is either a remake or a biography. However, unlike biographies of criminals, some biographies are worth making and one such biographical drama features R. Madhavan as Indian scientist and aerospace engineer, Nambi Narayanan.

The movie on the ISRO scientist was announced years ago by R. Madhavan and he will be portraying Narayanan from the ages of 27 to 75 in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect. While the actor and producer announced the release date of his next highly-awaited movie, here’s some information about the principal subject of the movie, Nambi Narayanan.

The 79-year-old Nambi Narayanan is an Indian scientist and aerospace engineer who is also a recipient of India’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan. As a senior official at the Indian Space Research Organisation, Narayanan was in charge of the cryogenics division and he was falsely accused and charged with espionage. The false spy charges against him were dismissed by the Central Bureau of Investigation but it destroyed his scientist career. In 1998, the Supreme Court of India declared him not guilty.

Narayanan was the one who introduced the liquid fuel rocket technology in India in the early 1970s. He developed liquid propellant motors, first building a successful 600 kilograms thrust engine in the mid-1970s and thereafter moving on to bigger engines. The Vikas engine developed by the Narayanan’s team was used in several ISRO rockets including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) that took Chandrayaan-1 and the second stage of PSLV.

Nambi Narayanan had alleged that he was forced to make false accusations against the top brass of ISRO. He also alleged that two officials had asked him to accuse Muthunayagam, then director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. Nambi released his autobiography titled Ormakalude Bhramanapadham in 2017, the same year R. Madhavan announced that he is working on a biographical movie on his life and experiences in the ISRO spy scandal.

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect features R. Madhavan as Nambi Narayanan and will bring the injustice that happened to him on the big screen. Madhavan is also producing the movie, has contributed to the writing and it will also mark his directorial debut. The trailer of the movie is scheduled for a release on 1st April while the movie is slated for a release in the last quarter.
