Miss Universe 2021 took place in Israel this year and India’s model Harnaaz Sandhu has made the country proud by winning the title and bringing home the Miss Universe crown after 21 years. The last Miss Universe from India was Lara Dutta in the year 2000.

Harnaaz Sandhu became the third Indian to win the Miss Universe pageant after Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta at the 70th edition of the prestigious annual event. South Africa’s Lalela Mswane was announced as the second runner up at the contest while Nadia Ferreira from Paraguay became the first runner up.

As part of the top-three round, Harnaaz was asked what advice she would give to young women on dealing with the pressures they face in the current world. The 21-year old representing India responded, “The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing, is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide. Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that is why I am standing here today.”

Indian celebrities and former pageant winners, Priyanka Chopra, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta among others took to their social media handles to forward their heartiest congratulations to Harnaaz on winning her big feat. Lara Dutta, who wore the crown of Miss Universe title in 2000, congratulated the new winner and said, “Congratulations @HarnaazSandhu03!!!! Welcome to the club!!! We’ve waited 21 long years for this!!! You make us SO SO proud!!! A billion dreams come true!!! @MissDivaOrg @MissUniverse.”
